  • I just wanted to post some pictures from Mom’s 50th b-day this summer. We surprised her good!! My sister and I spent a year arranging and organizing it. We planned a tea party just for ladies, mom’s friends and relatives. Then so that we didn’t leave my dad out we had a BBQ in the evening with all of the relatives and friends. So we had my mom totally buffaloed. Jody’s mother and father-in-law came up, they have never been to my folks before so they came under the pretext that they had to see the house before my folks sold it!! Anyway my mom was so worried about entertaining them, Jody and I had no trouble keeping it all as a surprise. Plus we pretended that some of the preparations were for Angela and Richard’s baby shower. So the day of the tea party: Shirley (Jody’s mother-in-law) “You know so and so told me about a neat restaurant to go to for lunch. A tea restaurant, starts with an R.” Mom “the Russia tea house”, Shirley “nope, nope, not that…was it Rutherford?” Me “oh yeah there is a Rutherford tea house by the university. Not too far from West Ed mall where you are going shopping.” “Jody “yeah we can meet you there for lunch with Heather (our cousin)”….. The surprise was so complete mom saw the cake before she saw everyone and said isn’t that a pretty cake – and still didn’t twig that is was hers!!! (She loves purple) Haha. So then of course, she really didn’t suspect that we could also have a BBQ for her that night. All the relatives were waiting when she and Shirley and another lady that joined her got back from their shopping trip. It was great fun!!

    Surprise!!!

We had everyone bring flowers so that all of the table had flower centerpieces and I found these neat picture holders at the dollar store that Jody and I tied with a matching ribbon and a little thank-you pendant for favors. We put a flower picture in each of them, pictures I have taken over the last couple of years.

We were served these delicious cucumber sandwiches and little rolls, then we had scones with raspberry cream, and tea of course. Yum!

Then of course we had cake!!!! Jody made the cake and decorated it. We both designed it, and I made the flower arrangements for it.

It was a delicious lemon-poppyseed snacking cake with lemon filling and lemon drizzle – Yum!

We had a lady come and tell us about “proper tea etiquette” so of course mom had to dress up as “Mrs. McDougall!”

The lady showing us the “proper” way to hold a tea-cup – pinch the stem of the tea-cup rather than putting your finger through the hole, so that your gloves, which apparently you leave on, doesn’t get stuck. If your pinky finger peeks out, that is okay, but you don’t actually deliberately stick your finger out. That is the reason for tea sandwiches and finger food too – anything that you can eat without taking your gloves off or getting them dirty!

Everyone else giving it a try!

Clayton was out with the boys, but Kayce was with us, and he was so good. He shared his puppy with mom here.

We also shared poems that Jody and I later put in a scrapbook that we made mom from the occasion. It was fun to scrapbook – but a lot of work!!We also read the letters of those who wanted to be there but couldn’t, like my grandma and my aunts.

  • Soooooo, well it will be two weeks tommorow since I came down with pnemonia and I am finally starting to feel better, as in no fevers, and no coughing all night.  The last two nights I spent some major time in the hot tub at the Y. They have a nice strong jet there that really pounds my back and my back muscles that are soooooooo sore from coughing.  But I still can't believe this lack of energy.  And everyone is telling me to take it slow.  So no working out for awhile I guess. Bummer.  I have been taking it easy anyway though, because I have been doing physio on my left knee. So haven't been allowed to run for 2 months now. But I was hoping to be getting back to it soon here. I guess not. Anyway I did a little research because I was trying to figure out how I got this and how I can prevent getting it in the future. Turns out I might not have much luck.  There is a vaccine for the most common form of bacterial pneumonia Streptococcus pneumoniae, but I don't think that is the kind I got anyway.  I think I got an atypical bacteria called Chlamydia pneumoniae. What I have is considered community-aquired pneumonia. In other words just a normal typically healthy person that picked it up from someone at the gym, or whereever.  Good handwashing technique does not really help this prevent getting this, because you are most likely to pick it up from air-borne droplets. yay.  not.  So basically you can get it from talking to any number of people that were infected or just carriers.  I guess that Streptococcus pneumoniae in particular normally resides in our mouth and upper airways, and only cause problems when somehow it migrates further down in the respiratory tract.  Before antibiotics one in every 3 people died from pneumonia.  Crazy.  And there are actually about 4-5 different bacteria's that can cause pneumonia, 4-5 viruses that can cause pneumonia (these of course are even more difficult to treat), fungal pneumonia, parasite pneumonia and aspiration pneumonia.  I didn't know this but SARS is a deadly coronovirus that acually causes pneumonia too.  So the bottom line is - if your chest starts to feel tight, and you get a fever, even if you aren't coughing yet - go to the doctor asap.  Okay. On to posting more cheerful things.

  • Just a quick note:   I was finally getting around to posting, being organized, feeling settled in to my new field and...... I get PNEUMONIA!!!  yes go figure.  I was incredibly sick for 7-8 days (It all started two weeks ago wednesday, the day of my last post, well I was sick that day, it got worse as the day went on until I was incredibly sick)   and I am still feeling wiped and bushed, and it is all I can do to drag my butt from the bed to the couch and back again.  When I get feeling a little better I am going to look this disease up some more and I will post again.

-one sorry sick feeling like a wimp person

  • Rather than do my usual humungous blog when I finally get around to it I am going to break this summer’s events and cute pictures worth blogging about into three of them – so hoping for three times the comments!! Just teasing. I did sign up to Facebook, so I suppose everyone will be more likely to look there but… I like blogging better so far. (Partly because I have to find my way around a new interface all over again) Besides blogging is a little more private. And although I love to share with my friends, I really don’t care if the rest of the world sees. So here is

    The Baby Shower!!

It was so fun to finally meet Dominic!! He is so sweet! I loved holding him and he really is a good little baby. As you will see – everyone loved holding him too! J First impressions!! Isn’t he so cute!! See he loves me too already, and he still gives kisses!!

     IMG_6062_46_1 IMG_6063_47_1

All right – Just bring on the cake!!! Babyshwr1_1_1 See told you he likes me!! Babyshwr2_2_1

Jody and I had lots of fun with the cake. She made it and I decorated it. It was fun to colour and match the fondant and style to the ribbon that first caught my eye.

    IMG_5882_13_1

The idea here was to pick a quality that you would wish Dominic to have – I think he will have them all!

    IMG_5885_1_1

The cake was double chocolate cherry – yum!!! Nice and moist and rich!!

    IMG_5924_19_1

And Marble Slab ice cream with all of the toppings to go with it!! Sweet overload – yes!! You would have loved it Melissa!

    IMG_5915_2_1

You might recognize a few of these people! It was really nice to meet Kelly too, Randy’s new wife. I missed going to the wedding.

    IMG_5912_17_1

Yes we played “cheesy” games – Good blackmail fodder eh!!?! J The idea was to help the parents and other likely someday parents-to-be practice those “essential” skills!! Skill 1: identify the baby food! The competition got fierce in the girls against guys face – off. The guys took to tasting the food even (even I didn’t think they would go that far!)

    IMG_5933_21_1

    Yum! Pureed Prunes!! IMG_5936_22_1 IMG_5939_23_1

The next challenge: Smell the Diaper and Identify it’s Contents C’mon Richard – you’re pretty used to this by now!!! IMG_5943_25_1 IMG_5942_24_1 IMG_5944_26_1 IMG_5945_27_1 IMG_5947_28_1 IMG_5948_29_1

hmmm this one smells like….. IMG_5956_30_1

The last Challenge: Race to Get the Baby Ready to Go. According to Angela and Richard this can be a real problem sometimes!! J So – diaper, diaper shirt, sleeper, swaddle baby, and fill bottle first to win! Richard has had lots of practice, so the race was close but he squeaks out Angela and finishes first:

    Presents!!!!

    IMG_6001_40_1 IMG_6002_41_1

Dominic to Dad: “Hey don’t get too interested in those, those are mine!” IMG_6006_42_1

    Cuddle Time!
